SPF CONFUSED ?

Same.

By Noa — 27, forever chasing glow, currently chasing shade

I used to think “écran total” was just French for “I won’t burn.” I tossed around “SPF 30” and “SPF 50” like they were basically the same thing. Until I came back from a three-day beach trip sporting sunglasses tan lines, crispy shoulders, and one perfectly protected patch behind my ear—the only place I actually remembered to reapply. Yep. Let’s talk sunscreen, because I was doing it all wrong.

SPF CONFUSED ? Same.

SPF ≠ Full Protection. I Wish It Did.

First things first: there’s no such thing as 100% protection.

Even SPF 50 only blocks about 98% of UVB rays—the ones that cause sunburns.

But here’s the kicker: UVB isn’t the whole story. UVA rays, which sneak through and cause premature aging and deeper skin damage, require a broad spectrum (aka UVA+UVB) sunscreen.

“Écran total” is mostly a marketing term, not a magic shield.

So Which SPF Should You Use?

  • Amount: You need about two finger-lengths just for your face, and roughly a shot glass full for your whole body. No shortcuts here.
  • Reapplication: Every 2 hours, and always after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.
  • Spectrum: Make sure your sunscreen is labeled broad spectrum—that means it protects against UVA and UVB.
  • Your Skin & Situation: If you’re pale, burn easily, or plan to stay outside longer than a coffee run, go SPF 50+. For quick city errands or if you’re a reapplication ninja, SPF 30 can cut it.

Your Tinted Moisturizer? It’s a Sidekick, Not a Shield.

That lightweight, tinted moisturizer with SPF 15 you love? It’s great for a little boost, but it’s not enough on its own. Think of it like your sunscreen’s hype-person—not the main act.

How I Protect My Skin Now

I still chase sunsets and poolside spritzes, but I’ve upgraded my sun game:

  • High SPF, broad spectrum, zero white cast formulas that actually feel good on my skin.
  • Mist between dips, reapply mid-brunch, and always have a soothing barrier cream ready for after-sun TLC.
  • I stopped chasing “écran total” and started chasing a routine I’ll actually keep.

The Real Glow? Healthy, Protected Skin

Glow isn’t a one-night stand with the sun—it’s a marathon with your skin’s health.

Protect it wisely, hydrate smartly, and give it the care it deserves.

That’s how you get that natural, lasting glow—no filter needed.
